Around 7 am each morning I hop on the Sounder train for the thirty minute trip into downtown Seattle. And each morning I can count on someone who feels I need to hear their entire cell phone conversation. Over the past couple of weeks I’ve heard the following:
- A lady give her full credit card number for a car repair bill. I could have written down her name, number, expiration date and security code. I should have.
- A guy talking to his mom about a recipe he couldn’t find on the internet.
- A lady discussing the financial freedom that comes from selling Mary Kay.
- Another guy berating someone.
I really hate cell phones. I spend $90/month for the opportunity to carry around a device that annoys me most of the time. I don’t know why I do it. I wish every coach on the train were a cell-free zone. Until that time I’ll just listen to these conversations and laugh while I put my iPod headphones on and crank some Zep.
Update on March 23 – This morning I sat across from a well dressed lady who called two friends to share with them the news that she had decided to run the Portland marathon. By the sound of it, and the number of time she had to repeat herself, she woke up both friends which isn’t’ surprising given it was just after 7 am.
