Update on March 23Here comes the reorg!

One more from BBspot: Microsoft, Sony delay Christmas till March

Microsoft vs. Apple Stock – 5 year trend

I left Microsoft just over six years ago as a full time employee. MSFT stock was around $115/share if I remember correctly. I thought it would be interesting, given all the hype surrounding Apple products, and now with the Windows Vista delay announcement from Microsoft, to go back and see how both stocks have performed over the past five years. In short, Apple up nearly 400% while Microsoft has remained stagnant.

Toss the Phone

Around 7 am each morning I hop on the Sounder train for the thirty minute trip into downtown Seattle. And each morning I can count on someone who feels I need to hear their entire cell phone conversation. Over the past couple of weeks I’ve heard the following:

  • A lady give her full credit card number for a car repair bill. I could have written down her name, number, expiration date and security code. I should have.
  • A guy talking to his mom about a recipe he couldn’t find on the internet.
  • A lady discussing the financial freedom that comes from selling Mary Kay.
  • Another guy berating someone.

I really hate cell phones. I spend $90/month for the opportunity to carry around a device that annoys me most of the time. I don’t know why I do it. I wish every coach on the train were a cell-free zone. Until that time I’ll just listen to these conversations and laugh while I put my iPod headphones on and crank some Zep.

Update on March 23 – This morning I sat across from a well dressed lady who called two friends to share with them the news that she had decided to run the Portland marathon. By the sound of it, and the number of time she had to repeat herself, she woke up both friends which isn’t’ surprising given it was just after 7 am.

Can anyone match Audi’s Quattro technology?

Which car or SUV can make it furthest up this ski slope? Audi takes on Nissan, Lexus, Volvo and BMW.

Un-pimp your Auto

The new VW GTI commercials are some of the best I’ve seen in ages. And it’s not just because I picked up a Passat GLX a couple weeks ago.
Spot #1 – “Jaaaaason…”

Spot #2 – “It’s definitely sucking”

Spot #3 – “Looks like it could fly”

Best of Open Source software for Windows

A good friend started using Firefox this week. This reminded me that many people are still unfamiliar with open source software that could make their internet experience a lot more enjoyable than merely relying on the applications that Microsoft bundles with Windows.

I can’t think of many reasons to launch Internet Explorer these days. The sweet IE Tab extenstion for Firefox has replaced those few times (Sharepoint and Windows update sites) I had to use IE.

Open Source Windows suggests some of the best open source applications avaialable on the Windows platform.

CNN Pipeline

CNN has released streaming news feed called Pipeline which is quite impressive. For $2.95/month or $24.95/year you can get good quality video stream without a TV tuner card. I’ve been using this service for a few days now and it’s a keeper.

Glaucoma, Glaucoma, Glaucoma!

Glaucoma is not a laughing matter, but I can’t help myself after viewing the Association of International Glaucoma Societies website listed as one of the winners of the Worst Web Design Techniques of 2005 from Vincent Flanders.

That has the best background music I’ve ever heard. Luckily I was able to download the song and add it to my playlist. And what’s up with the heads bopping up and down? This site has something for everyone. Impressive!
