“Boot Camp” appears to benefit Microsoft the most

Apple released boot camp last week which will allow Intel Mac users to boot into OS X 10.4 or Windows XP. I’m just trying to figure out just how Apple benefits from this development. Clearly, Microsoft would love to sell another retail copy of Windows XP which makes them far more money than selling another OEM version. Microsoft must love the idea of Apple releasing a product that could drive sales of retail XP.

But how does Apple benefit from Boot Camp? I suppose the train of thought goes something like this:

  1. Lots of unhappy Windows users
  2. Unhappy users have invested $$$ in Windows software
  3. Bootcamp gives them chance to use existing Windows software
  4. Allows Windows users to transition to OS X 10.4 at own pace
  5. Apple gains a hardware sale that would have gone to Dell or whomever
  6. Comparison of OSes eventually results in Windows user converting to Apple hardware & software

It just seems like a lot of things have to fall in place for Apple to reap even a fraction of the benefits Microsoft will gain. I look forward to the day when I can build my own computer chosing the brand and quality of every part that goes into my Lian-Li case. And once I’ve done that I can chose between a Microsoft or Apple OS with zero compromises.

The Masters Magic

NICKLAUS_MASTERS_1986.jpgThe Masters tournament from Augusta National begins tomorrow and I wouldn’t be surprised to see something very special transpire over the next four days.

It was only 10 years ago that Greg Norman took a six shot lead into the final round. What followed was arguably the greatest collapse in any major. I remember watching him choke an iron into Rae’s Creek on the 12th hole to fall out of the lead nobody figured he’d relinquish.

And it was twenty years ago that the magnificent Nicklaus turned back the clock to collect his sixth green jacket during a magical run like we’d never seen before. I think his plaid pants had something to do with it!

If I had a ticket to attend any sporting event in the world it would have to be the Masters. Let’s hope 2006 is as interesting as 1996 and 1986 were.
